History and development of RWE npower
01 Jul 2011
In 1990 National Power was one of four companies created from the privatisation of the former Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) along with Powergen, Nuclear Electric and The National Grid Company. National Power developed an international business, and then demerged in 2000 into International Power and a UK business Innogy plc. Innogy was subsequently acquired by RWE in 2002 and renamed RWE npower in 2004.
In October 1999 National Power created a retail business and launched it to the market under the name npower in April 2000. It ultimately combined the supply businesses of MEB, Calortex, MEB Powerline, National Power Energy Direct, Independent Energy, Yorkshire Electricity and Northern Electric and Gas.
In 1991, National Power created a subsidiary company, National Wind Power to manage its wind generation activities, which was subsequently renamed npower renewables. In 2008 RWE npower renewables became part of the new global RWE renewables company, RWE Innogy.
