Didcot A Power Station's technical decommissioning has now been completed, and the next phase, deconstruction and demolition, will soon be starting. The RWE team will hand over responsibility of the site to newly appointed demolition contractors Coleman & Company in the next month.
RWE npower retains ownership of the site and all the associated land. Coleman & Company will be managing initial stages of the deconstruction process on behalf of RWE npower and have signed an early works agreement.
The early works agreement includes the deconstruction of a number of small buildings on site later this year, and allows for asbestos removal planning and a materials recovery programme. Demolition of major parts of the site, such as the cooling towers, is highly technical, taking considerable time to plan and deliver successfully and sensitively. Dates have not yet been finalised, but major activity of this type is unlikely to take place until 2014 at the earliest.
Coleman & Company are one of the UK’s leading specialist demolition contractors, successfully having carried out controlled demolition projects for over 50 years.
Phil Noake, Didcot A station manager said, “We are pleased to announce that Coleman & Company have been appointed on an early works agreement to begin the preparatory demolition works. Coleman will subsequently be taking over the management of the site and will be working closely with RWE and the local community over the coming months.”
Mark Coleman, Managing Director of Coleman & Company Ltd said,
“We are absolutely delighted to be involved in this intricate demolition project, working for a hugely respected client in the industry, RWE. We will be employing up to 200 people on site at peak, providing not only continued employment for our existing workforce over the next three years, but also opportunities for local people and businesses.”
“Coleman & Company is well known for reliably delivering a variety of high profile and large scale demolition projects across the UK. The demolition of Didcot A Power Station will require high levels of safety management along with careful planning and coordination. All of the skills and expertise gained over the last 50 years will be employed. We will be engaging with the surrounding businesses and the local community, which I am sure will play a major part in the successful conclusion of this part of Didcot A’s story.”
In order to give local people an update on the upcoming deconstruction activities at the site, two drop-in sessions are being held at Didcot Civic Hall at the end of September.
Team members from RWE npower and Coleman & Company will be on hand at both sessions to answer any questions on the demolition activities and future land use, as well as on the significant, ongoing role of Didcot B gas-fired power station on the site.
The drop-in sessions will take place at Didcot Civic Hall, Britwell Road, Didcot, on the following dates and you are warmly invited to attend:
Tuesday 24th September – 9.30am until 4.30pm
Wednesday 25th September – 4pm until 8pm
Didcot B gas fired power station has continued to provide electricity to the National Grid despite the closure of Didcot A in March this year. Didcot B is a modern, efficient 1,400MW combined cycle gas turbine power station that provides enough power to meet the needs of around 1 million households.
