Little Barford Power Station, Little Barford, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, PE19 6YT • A 680MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station, powered by natural gas. It has two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine. • Little Barford power station has been in operation since 1996 and employs 65 staff. Natural gas NG Gas National Transmission System (NTS) is used - plus fuel oil from the storage facilities at Sandy. The station uses 240 million therms per year and contributes around £6 million towards the local economy. • Permission was received from the DTI in 2005 (and subsequently the Environment Agency) to construct and operate a 20MW open cycle gas turbine unit on the site for use as a ‘Black Start’ facility. This means that in the event of a Grid failure, the power station can re-energise local sections of the Grid to restore power supplies to the community. • The Visitors Centre has been renovated and the local trust ‘Landscape 2000’ has supported a ‘Green Energy Trail’ to encourage local schools to help maintain the trail and oversee the willow plantation, which was constructed by a team of volunteers.
